Install And Care Of Your New Tree And Shrub Landscape

1- How big should I make the hole?

Make your planting hole at least 6" wider than the root ball. The depth should be the same as the root ball. If you plant to deep it will kill your tree

2- Should I replace the soil where I'm planting?

Try not to over amend the soil. Your new plant must adapt to your soil condition as quickly as possible. Making the soil in the hole too good creates a clay pot effect, and your new plant will not grow roots into your existing soil. If your soil is so bad that it needs organic matter (Black Dirt) mix only a small amount with your soil and back fill with that mix.

3- Should I remove the burlap from the roots?

No. The burlap aids in retaining moisture for the plant after planting, and should rot after one season. Some trees and shrubs come with a wire basket over the burlap. Do not remove the basket. A root ball is very fragile and delicate, and must remain intact during the planting process. Trying to remove the wire basket can and will damage the ball, and may cause the death of your plant. The basket will rust and decay over a period of time, well before it could cause any interference to the root system.

4- How often should I water?

Not too much, but we recommend about once or twice per week.

5- How often should I feed them?

If you use Miracle -Gro then once per week thru June is fine. Feeding past June is not recommended.
If you only want to feed once, use a granular fertilizer spread over the soil surface, and water it in well.

How To Care For Your Flower Bed (Perennials And Annuals)

1- How many annuals do I need?

A simple formula will get the exact number you need.
Length x Width = sq ft divided by *Spacing distance =
Quantity of plants needed
6" = .25
8" = .44
10" = .70
12" = 1.00
15" = 1.56
18" = 2.25
* ADD 15% FOR STAGGERED PLANTINGS.

2- Should I replace the soil where I'm planting?

Yes. If this will be a flower bed for any length of time we recommend working in at least 4" - 6" of Organic Soil with a rototiller.

3- Should I tease apart the roots before planting?

It is recommended to slightly tease apart the roots to encourage new root growth. But, one must be careful they do not damage the tender root system.

4- How often should I water?

Annuals and perennials are notorious for drying out quickly due to their rapid seasonal growth. We recommend water at least once a day until the plants are established. Once established, water one inch per week. Anuuals and perennials should be rooted in 3 weeks.

5- How often should I feed my plants?

Miracle - Gro is a favorite of flowers and can be used everyday or once per week. Since we recommend watering everyday it takes no time to hook up a hose end sprayer with Miracle - Gro for your daily water.

* Caution - Could cause oversize, busy plants, with excessive flowering!

6- Do I have to worry about spraying pesticides?

As a rule of thumb you should not have to for basic annuals such as impatiens, petunias, or begonias.

Although it does not hurt to apply Orthenex- made by Ortho once or twice during the season. This will protect your flowering plants from both insect, and disease.

Mulching

1- How much will one square yard of mulch cover?

Approximately 100 square feet at 2 to 2 1/2 inches thick

How to Control those Annoying Weeds

1- What is an easy way to control weeds in my landscape?

In March apply preen weed preventer to all landscape beds to prevent further germination of weeds at a rate of 5Lbs per 800 square feet. Follow up with a second application in the beginning of July

April through frost- continue weed control in landscape beds by spraying Round-Up vegetation killer on weeds only and not on landscape plants. Take care not to allow overspray to contact leaves on landscape plants so they will not be injured.

Mulching either yearly or everyother year will also help to reduce the amount of weeds which will appear.
